Charger wrestling is back at Memorial High School!
For the first time since 2016, Memorial athletes will have the opportunity to compete in the sport, and they are excited for the opportunity. Nearly forty students have already signed up to participate.
"Wrestling is a sport that can you make you better at anything else in life whether it be other sports or academics and even later in life as an adult," said wrestling coach Devin Martinez. "Wrestling is about self-control, discipline, and learning the value of hard work -- skills that every student should have in their toolbox."
Memorial will have boys and girls teams with 14 weight classes each. Students are welcome to join anytime this year, and there will be beginner practices so students can try out the sport before committing.
Coach Martinez competed in wrestling as a student and has coached state championship programs.
"Wrestling taught me about to deal with things one on one. Life, just like wrestling, in an individual sport and at the end of the day there is no one to blame but yourself. Sometimes things work, sometimes they don’t. No matter what happens, at the end of the match, a wrestler is expected to shake their opponents hand and move on to the next challenge," he said. "Wrestling can teach you how to hope for the best but be prepared for the worst. That’s why I love it, that’s why own children do it, and that’s why I encourage everyone and anyone to try it."
Wrestling season starts in October, with most competitions taking place in December and January. Regionals and the state tournament are held in February. If you are interested joining the team, reach out to Coach Martinez for more information.
