Nicki West named Memorial Teacher of the Year

Nicki West has been selected as the 2022-2023 Memorial High School Teacher of the Year!

This is Nicki's 13th year working for Tulsa Public Schools and her sixth at Memorial where she teaches U.S. history and mentors students in the Early College High School program.

"I knew from a pretty young age that I wanted to teach and coach. Being a second generation Greek American, education was always important to my family. I am a product of TPS (Council Oak/Lee, Wilson MS, Booker T. ‘05). I had the best P.E. teacher at Council Oak, the most challenging English teacher at Wilson, and Booker T. changed my life in so many ways. It would be impossible to give back what was given to me, but it is something I strive for each day."

Nicki is the head coach of the boys soccer team.

"These boys have my heart -- all 26 of them. They worked really hard this fall and earned a 3.8 program GPA. Twenty-five of the student-athletes made the honor roll. They have also spent the last few years going to feeder elementary schools to read, mentor, and celebrate younger students. They even come over annually to celebrate my own kids’ birthdays. Coaching them is one of my biggest blessings."

Nicki describes Memorial as her home away from home.

"I get to work with some of the most selfless co-workers who show flexibility and grace to our entire student body. Our administration truly wants our kids to be successful and will go above and beyond to make that happen. More than anything though, our kids are special. Each of our students are writing their own story, and it is a blessing to play a small role in their journey."
