Apply for the Seal of Biliteracy Before Winter Break to Open College and Career Opportunities

Friday, December 20th is the last day for seniors to apply for the Seal of Biliteracy. The seal will show that the student is proficient in two or more languages.

The purpose of the Seal of Biliteracy is to:

  • encourage students to study languages;
  • to certify attainment of biliteracy skills;
  • to recognize the value of language diversity;
  • and to prepare students with 21st century skills that will benefit them in the labor market and the global society.

The requirements and application for the seal can be found here.

Last year, Yovanca Cervantes was one of the Seal of Biliteracy recipients. She moved to the United States with her family when she was nine years old.

“I couldn't communicate with anyone, and I didn't understand anything at school,” said Yovanca. “My grades suffered, and I would feel sad because of this. One day I decided that I had to do something about this.”

So, Yovanca studied and practiced. She would practice with her sister, her classmates, and her teachers. Slowly but surely, her English language skills blossomed.

“When I received the Seal of Biliteracy I was extremely proud of myself because that seal was proof that I had reached a goal that I set 10 years ago,” said Yovanca.

Now, Yovanca is attending college at the University of Central Oklahoma, setting new goals for herself.

[The seal] has helped me feel more confident in myself. Knowing two languages has helped me be more open-minded, and I really like how I can communicate with many people. I am interested in learning more languages because it would allow me to communicate with even more people. Also, knowing two languages has helped me help others, which is something that I enjoy doing. I always think about the times when I was struggling with the language, and many times I wished someone would help me, so I am happy I can be that person to others.”

Don’t miss out on this opportunity! Apply today to open doors for college and career opportunities. If you have any questions about the Seal of Biliteracy, please reach out to Liliane Vannoy or Jessica Lanterman. Read more about the seal here.
